Slackintosh was pretty decent through about 8.1 or so, but the maintainer has said he's too busy with other projects to pursue Slackintosh right now. > I have a > slug of older (pre G3) boxes that would loove some flavor of Linux other > than RedHat based. I've been using CRUX-PPC (cruxppc.sunsite.dk, IIRC), and have been quite happy with it so far. I don't know exactly how well it'll do with pre-G3 hardware, but it's got a small footprint, so it's probably worth a shot. --keith -- kkeller-usenet@wombat.san-francisco.ca.us (try just my userid to email me) AOLSFAQ=http://wombat.san-francisco.ca.us/cgi-bin/fom |

I've been in contact with Russell Kroll who has given me permission to take over the Slackintosh name and continue development for the PPC. There is work in progress (nothing near a release yet), but things are on their way. My plan is *not* to track -current but to port the last stable version of Slackware over to PPC - current changes too frequently for a port project to keep up to date with. Feel free to email me if you'd like any further details or to help out. Just out of curiosity what does porting involve? Do you just change the compiler flags and re-run the build scripts and then tidy up any errors and differences? (Noting that the latter may be quite large) -- http://www.petezilla.co.uk |

That's great news! Do you have a website/mailing list (or plans for either)? --keith -- kkeller-usenet@wombat.san-francisco.ca.us (try just my userid to email me) AOLSFAQ=http://wombat.san-francisco.ca.us/cgi-bin/fom |

(Noting that the latter may be quite large) There are some packages that need to be added to support the differences between x86 and PPC (boot manager, partition tool (stock fdisk doesn't support native MacOS-stype partition tables), a few others I can't recall). And, of course, lilo is useless on a PPC, and there are a few other packages that are not terribly useful. --keith -- kkeller-usenet@wombat.san-francisco.ca.us (try just my userid to email me) AOLSFAQ=http://wombat.san-francisco.ca.us/cgi-bin/fom |

I was going to register the "slackintosh.org" domain name and put some details on there, but it appears some squatter has beaten me to the domain (as well as the .net and .com ones). It may be worthwhile changing the name of the project to something more indictive of the project. Suggestions are welcome D. -- Darren Austin. --------------------------------------------------------------- To reply: Replace "devnull" with "news" in the From: address. |
