Default Fixed pkgtool script needs testing

Hi there

A number of people have noticed that the pkgtool in Slackware-current
does not work properly with packages that fail to follow the standard
install/slack-desc format.

Checkinstall is a culprit for making packages that are broken in this
manner.

A new version of pkgtool may be found here:
ftp://ftp.armedslack.org/armedslack-...ls/pkgtool.new

The current version of pkgtool in Slackware-current is about to be
reverted to its previous incarnation (far slower) for the release of
Slackware 10.1.

Please can those people who have had problems with pkgtool and broken packages
please test the new version above, and report any problems to Jim Hawkins
(whose address is in the change history at the head of the script).
Please do *not* email Pat -- he's busy working hard at getting 10.1 released :-)

Once we're satisfied that it works, it'll go into Slackware-current (post-10.1).

Thanks.

I just sent Jim my initial test results. All seems fine with the fixed
pkgtool, and I tried to throw some truly goofy package descriptions at it.

I really wish this speed-enhanced version of pkgtool could be included in
10.1. It's a great improvement. On the other hand, I guess it's a good
thing that problems surfaced prior to 10.1's release (though my problems
with the pre-fix version went away after I standardized my package
descriptions -- plus, I feel better about myself all around now that I'm a
keen slacker and not a slack slacker.

sorry, my news server didn't get the top message so i'm repling to you.
who does this bug affect?
i tried your new pkgtool, its fast as never before , and package list is
working again.
i make (personal) packages with checkinstall 1.5.3, but usualy dont include
any info (default is "package created with checkinstall, blabla")... am i
affected?
one more thingie, this feature dissapeared in slack 10. on "remove" or
"view" package list, i hit the first key to quick browse to packages
beggining with, say "k". not any more (only on main menu, but that does not
help much)! need i say that adding this would probably make pkgtool perfect
again

btw, using it on slack 10, with no problem. compiled from current. perhaps,
when this is over, a package for slack 10 could appear on linuxpackages? i
mean, pkgtools 10 is quite horrible and slow

I'm using checkinstall 1.53. I think there's a more recent beta available,
but I haven't tried it yet.
