I get the feeling GNOME's days are numbered in Slackware. There's also this in the changelog: Apparently gftp doesn't require any of the GNOME libraries. I've heard that AbiWord can also be built so that it does not require GNOME libraries but haven't had much luck getting it to work that way. Does anyone know how to do that? How about a GNOMEless gnumeric (I suspect that's not possible, but...)? *gulp* |

I believe Pat has said that he will not support Gnome any further. I would expect that the next release of Slack (11.0?) will not have Gnome at all. -- If you're not on the edge, you're taking up too much space. Linux Registered User #327951 |

| Tis true, I don't think Pat will be supporting gnome for much longer. Dropline has got a pretty good thing going with their own version of gnome designed for slackware. I've been using it for a couple of years and have never had any problems. http://www.dropline.net/gnome/ |

| Thanks everybody for your answers. I will give Dropline a try. In the meantime I found that Gnome 2.8.2 was tested with the kernel 2.6 series and that the results with 2.4 may vary. Hm, if I want to use kernel 2.4.29 I guess I end up with XFCE.... | Peter, In order to have automounting working in Gnome 2.8, you need a 2.6 kernel. I've been running a stock Slackware 2.6.7 kernel with Slackware 10 and Dropline Gnome for a few months now and all is well. You can use a 2.4 kernel with Dropline Gnome 2.8, you just won't have automount working. You'll also have to run dropline-installer with the --force option, but all reports are that it works fine. There is a dropline wiki with a HOWTO on installing a 2.6 kernel from slackware (installpkg; no compiling required), and the Dropline crew are friendly and helpful on the forums. Good Luck. |

Unfortunately, there seem to be problems using dropline on slack 10.1 (minor, not really specified). They will port dropline to 10.1 only after gnome 2.10 is out, which is expected in about 1 month. They say, you can try with the --force option, and things should (mostly) work.... Good luck Franz -- Franz M. Sauerzopf Atominstitut, TU Wien |

Or KDE, or Gnome 2.6, or.... there are other choices.... There is not that much difference between Gnome 2.6.x and Gnome 2.8.x -- If you're not on the edge, you're taking up too much space.
