| I downloaded and installed realplayer and connected to a live audio stream. It seems to be working OK except for one thing, no sound comes out. I have alsamixer set up for maximum volume. I turned off system sounds. Either I don't have a critical driver somewhere or I have something else turned on that blocks Realplayer from sound output. Can someone suggest which of the 40 jillion sound thingies on Linux/Slackware/KDE need to be turned on and which need to be turned off to get Realplayer to work? There is alsamixer, and Arts, and System sounds and Kmix and System Sounds and I probably some more that I have missed. Please, I have tried all kinds of combinations. In the old days, with earlier Slacks and much fewer choices I got it working. Now I am up to Slack 10.1, and clearly out of my depth. Thanks for any help. John Culleton |

Do you have sound for any other applications that do produce sound? what kind of soundcard do you have? what does in the root console "lsmod |grep snd" produce? what kernel do you use? > Either I don't have a critical driver somewhere or I have something > else turned on that blocks Realplayer from sound output. I tweaked a few parameters in Realplayer itself, and started getting badly distorted sound, as if I were getting two feeds slightly out of sync of the same live broadcast. Then after a while this problem sorted itself out and I started getting clear sound. FWIW here is the output from lsmod |grep snd snd-pcm-oss 36704 1 snd-mixer-oss 12152 1 [snd-pcm-oss] snd-ens1371 11392 2 gameport 1420 0 [snd-ens1371] snd-rawmidi 12320 0 [snd-ens1371] snd-seq-device 3812 0 [snd-rawmidi] snd-ac97-codec 52472 0 [snd-ens1371] snd-pcm 54504 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-ens1371 snd-ac97-codec] snd-timer 13412 0 [snd-pcm] snd 31268 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-ens1371 snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device snd-ac97-codec snd-pcm snd-timer] snd-page-alloc 4712 0 [snd-mixer-oss snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device snd-pcm snd-timer snd] soundcore 3396 6 [snd] The sound system is enabled again and on the mixer the only input selected is line. Both the green and red lights are lit on that device. This may be irrelevant. On the output side PCM also has a green light, and that is essential. -- John Culleton Able Indexers and Typesetters |

The older one -- what was it, 7? -- did. Something like that. It may be with the Helix community that RealPlayer 10 does work all right with ALSA. Might be worth a look at https://player.helixcommunity.org/2004/downloads just to see what there is to see. |

I guess I should have stated also, that I have been using RP 10 since it came out and before that 8 and 9. But YMMV. Scott -- Only trust pipesmoking penguins. |

RealPlayer 10 works great with Alsa! Yet another case of alsaphobia? Slide the volume bar all the way to the right, maybe that will help ;-) Gary -- http://jackalope.homelinux.net/~gcarlson/ ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 120,000+ Newsgroups ----= East and West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =---- |
