Default Slackware 10.1 and SIL3114 SATA controller

Hey guys and gals,

I just bought an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe board and it has the Silicon Image
Controller in it and it seems that the bare.i kernel doesn't see it. Now
previous I had the A7N8X-E Deluxe board that had the Silicon Image 3112
controller and I installed 10.0 without issue. I was pretty much under
the impression that the 3114 just had 4 sata sockets instead of the 2
that the 3112 has.

So, Anyone work with this controller before and have any advice? I have
googled my brians out and really don't see an answer per say so I
figured I would consult a more central forum....being here :-D

I have an ASUS board coming in a few days. My understanding is to use the
2.6.10 sata kernel for install vs. bare.i. Unfortunately this is still in
the planning stage and I cannot speak from experience.

It appears there have been major changes in the handling of SATA from 2.4.xx
to 2.6.10.

Err. Isn't the slackware 2.6.10 sata kernel named sata.i? Or did I misread
the notes.

No. The sata.i kernel is the 2.4.29 version of the kernel. There's only
one "all purpose" 2.6.10 kernel in the testing tree.

I think so.

This area is designed to become quite warm during normal operation.

TO ALL -

Ok, I will read up on this. I had heard of the sata.i kernel but since
10.0 installed without a hitch, I thought 10.1 would do the same.

Thanks you for you input!

I've done this and can say that sata.i works fine with the Silicon
Image controller (the red jacks on this board).

The Slackware 10.1 sata.i however, doesn't appear to like the nvidia
sata controller (the black jacks) on this board. (I did get it working
with the 2.6.11-rc4 kernel)

Also, don't plan on installing from a SATA CD or DVD drive regardless
of which controller it is plugged in to; the sata.i kernel doesn't
support ATAPI over SATA. (I did get my Plextor SATA DVD drive working
with the 2.6.11-rc4 after applying Jeff Garzik's libata patches at
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...garzik/libata/)
