Since you need windows to run your software there is no reason to learn linux. Linux won't do anything that windows will do - and a whole lot less besides - so it would be redundant to learn linux. Stick with windows until you have a real reason to switch. Remember, an OS should never be chosen on its own merits. Pick the OS that runs with your software and hardware and you're away to the races. cordially, as always, rm -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: PGP 6.5.8 iQA/AwUBQjSdVOEckfDWS6x8EQIEHgCgx02iLdSpl+osgplKbvp1pS DP1rMAoLXb BY6TnCgJg4ue6KI1s/SmbcH7 =GluR -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

I was asked why I didn't use 10.1 instead of 9.1 I want Linux to use a program like Samba for building a server. It isn't about switching anything, it's about being to build servers and wanting to use Linux on it's own merits. I was given the discs by a friend and that is the reason for using 9.1. Today however I have read that any version 10 and above uses Xorg and may be a better fit to get my display working properly. Sorry if I didn't explain myself clear enough, I guess I just didn't see how you point applied to my question. Paul |

And many windows users keep a Knoppix disk around just for recovery purposes in case their Windows partition is ravaged by a virus. Using Knoppix it may still be possible to recover some files. Some Windows software can be run under the auspices of Wine or Crossover on the Linux OS. Then you have the best of both worlds, the greater security of Linux and availability of some programs not yet ported to Linux. I marvel at the amount of effort and money Windows users expend just to prevent external attacks. When I use my Windows partition unless I need to specifically download something I turn the cable modem off. My Linux partitions have never been attacked in about a decade of online use.
