Default Windows media player?

I access radio stations with Relplayer and have few problems. But now
someone has come up with a radio broadcast that "requires Windows Player."

Two questions:
1. Does Windows Media Player use a specific sound format that is different
from the common ones like wav etc.?
2. If the answer is yes then is there a Linux player that will handle that
stream?

Look up Mplayer, I have yet to see working Windows media formats it
can't handle if you also have the right codecs for it. There are other
choices like Xine which also work but Mplayer works every time I've
tried it.

You can read about the format here:

Mplayer with the right codecs handles this very well. But usually the
biggest problem is to find the link to the .asx file. Its normally
hidden behind some M$-java-script that first checks Internet Explorer to
see if Windows Media Player is installed.
