there are several options in Linux for this, the one that comes to mind
is SOL-diag http://www.sol-linux.com/Private/Download/?lang=English

be sure to get the SOL that has -diag at the end of the name, it is a
live CD like knoppix so you want have to actually install it just boot
the CD and run the diagnonis app, i don;t know all the details about
everything it does...

another one is R.I.P (Rescue is Possible) Linux a live CD
http://www.tux.org/pub/people/kent-r...looplinux/rip/

but for your best bet to find what exactly you want you will just have
to browse thru http://www.distrowatch.com/ and see, Fire Linux, Plan B,
are a few more that offer tools for what you want...

The hdparm utility can be used both for testing and optimizing a
drive. Test the drive using 'hdparm -Tt /dev/hdX'

This area is designed to become quite warm during normal operation.

This is probably the best one. Thanks.
I does a great job of checking the speeds.
