| Sorry about the OT, but no luck with the "emulator" NGs and google has nothing useful. I ask here because the locals are arguably more knowledgeable that those in other Linux NGs. Running Slackware 10.0 / 2.6.7. I want to run Windows 95 in an emulator (have an app that only runs in W95). Can't use Wine because I don't have W95 on my system. So I've chosen Bochs. Anyone with any experience with W95 in Bochs under Linux? My email address is my sig; please contact me. Thanks, Longfellow -- Email is wtallman at olypen dot com |

I'm a little confused. How do you expect to run W95 under Bochs if you don't have it on your system? You're going to have to put it on your system to do that. And when you do put it on your system, you'll get way better performance from Wine than from Bochs. HTH does on install it without having it grab the MBR and screw over whatever else is on hda1? I've got w98 there now, hasn't been booted in living memory but the minute I get rid of it.... well, you know.. So I was going to try to install w95 in a directory to mount via loopback or whatever bochs requires. But there's a problem I'd like to resolve before I get there: a) the instructions for loading up w95 is for a disk set and b) I've got an upgrade CD. I'm sorta stumped by this business and would like to know wth I'm missing (or just don't understand...). What I'd really like to know is how to extract a .dll file from the w95 CD to satisfy the one requirement (?) that both w98 and wine say is missing. The chances of my discovering this on a windows NG seem rather dismal, I would suspect. I mean, you guys probably know more about how one would go about doing that than the M$addicts...lol!!! Wish I'd kept the tape backup of w95... sigh. Any ideas? If so, my email address is my sig.... Longfellow -- Email is wtallman at olypen dot com |

You just install Windows from the CD in the usual way, into a disk file instead of a separate partition. Bochs is *very* slow. John |

It took a lot of time to install it, but it worked. If I remeber correctly the Bochs documentation explains how to install and run Win95. If your using Bochs then Win95 is installed inside a file similar to a loop-mounted image. I've had Bochs up running DOS 6.2 & Win3.11 and it worked but Bochs gave me the impression that its still very immature and it needs a lot of development. -- Thomas O. Wine has an option to setup a "fake" windows system. You still must install your application so the proper DLLs and registry entries are present BUT its not always necessary to have MSWin installed to use WINE! (As far as my experience has been anyway.)
