Default xfce desktop not starting

hi all

i've been looking for an alternative desktop/window manager to replace
gnome. so far the best i found is xfce. kde i don't like for
phylosophical reasons (though it's what i use now

one problem that i think is slackware specific (or possibly
installation-specific) is that when i start xfce, i gen no desktop
picture/gradient and i cannot right click on the desktop.

xfdesktop exists and if i run it, my desktop picture comes up, while i
get lots of
*** attempt to put segment in horiz list twice
in the terminal

xfdesktop is supposed to be started in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.xfce but
it doesn't. i tried creating my own .xinitrc and still nothing changes.

i then tried to install xfce by myself using their .bin istaller and
nothing changes.

has anyone heard of such a problem? can you suggest something else to try?

please help

mig21

p.s. i use slackware 10.1 with no major updates (dropline, kde, etc)

Wise choice this xfce. Try typing xfce-session on the command line, see
what happens.

if i type xfce4-session, i get this:
xfce4-session: Another session manager is already runnin

unless i do it in a tty, then i get a gtk screen missing error

but while playing with this i noticed that root's desktop works just
fine. any idea what permissions i should be looking at?

Did you use xwmconfig to change window managers? (Then startx
from the command line ... )

What is the output of the terminal that the startx is run in? (disregard
the "attempt to put segment in horiz list" warnings - they're a problem in
one of the svg libraries (librsvg?) and are nonfatal.

Couple of things you might want to try:

1. mv .xfce .xfce.bck && mv .xfce4 .xfce4.bck && startx

2. Start X, then in a terminal run xfdesktop. Set xfce to save session
on logout. Logout. Restart X.
