| Hello all, I'm attempting a fresh 10.1 install on an aging Pentium Pro box (Intel VS440FX mobo, 128MB RAM, zero-written hard disk partitioned smartly) and at some random package point during the installation the process will hang and go no further, just frozen in time on the monitor. All disk images were downloaded, md5'ed, and burned well, and this machine has had a myriad of operating systems installed to it over its life. Any suggestions (besides "get a new computer"), or do I just let it be and see what happens? Thanks! I have a sentimental attachment to this computer, in case you are wondering. In fact, I am in love with her. |

Thanks! When you're going through the install, I think it's possible to see extra installation messages in another console. (I've been upgrading for years so I may be mistaken.) Try pressing alt+f1, alt+f2 etc to see if you can find out if there's any messages about the package that's currently being installed. Then you can avoid trying to install that package/diskset through the package selection. Alternatively, another way around this is to do a very minimal install, just enough to boot, such as installing the a/ series. Then mount the cdrom and install each diskset one at a time. -- Mark Hill |

Other consoles are still there. Some old hardware doesn't like standard install, you might try the simpler, low-memory kernels as they probe for less drivers. I'm unsure about what is logged. Another issue I've had is old hard drives not doing DMA properly, so there are things to check in BIOS too. Install in PIO mode, then switch back to DMA when correct driver compiled into kernel. Cheers, Grant. |
