I downloaded the kde 3.4 packages and installed them and can't sent with
kmail because "authentication support is not compiled into kio-smtp". Am I
missing something?

Make sure you install sasl modules. Also, install the kde packages from
linuxpackages.net. The base and pim packages have sasl support compiled in.
Mine works great now except for kcontrol which seems to not be able to show
any modules. No one seems to know what is wrong.

My KDE 3.4 is working perfectly, kcontrol shows verything it did before, My
ISP does not use SSL for mail though. here are the packages I updated.

I sure wish I knew what happened to mine. When I type kcontrol I get the
following followed by a blank kcontrol window:

kcontrol: WARNING: No K menu group with X-KDE-BaseGroup=settings found !
Defaulting to Settings/


Although even with this I can still use kde apps like kontact etc. I just
can't seem to change preferences via kcontrol.

The _Problem_
The sasl library is looking for plugins in /usr/lib/sasl2,
whereas you most likely have them in /usr/_local_/lib/sasl2.

The _Solution_
ln -s or set SASL_PATH

Disable SMTP authentication in KMail.
The slackware-current packages don't support authentication.
On linuxpackages there are separate packages that support SASL.
