Default Audio problem with 10.1

I have recently installed 10.1 on my desktop PC but I have a problem
with sound.
With XMMS I can listen to Audio CD and watch and listen to tv with
TVTime.
When I try to play .wav files: $aplay /usr/share/sounds/warning.wav ,
i cant hear sound so with xine/totem/mplayer films or dvds are played
but without sound.
Can someone help me.
Thanks.

What output driver are you using under xmms?
What levels are shown in alsamixer? Is anything muted?
What output drivers are you trying to use with xine/totem/mplayer?
