$1200 is just a blip on the expense stream for a lot of places. If you
need to recover that data bad enough, it is worth it. My POE stores
backups in a retired salt mine. The IT dept. runs big iron - no windows
or any sort of unix on those machines.

This is what they invented RAID for. While not a backup, RAID protects
you from these sort of hard drive failures. Spending the extra bucks
on a hardware RAID controller and additional drives is well worth the
money if you have any sort of critical data.
