guess some more info is needed. the supplied modem
contains pppoe internally, and in winblows works with
no connection software.
i guess i need to know how and where to enter
ip, subnet mask, and default gateway. not sure what
to configure, rp-pppoe, netconfig, ifconfig, all, or none.

What modem are you using? I'm using a Speedstream 5100, supplied by SBC,
and it isn't necessary to deal with pppoe. That's handled internally by
the modem.
Just use netconfig to set-up eth0 with dhcp. Then, open a browser to
http://192.168.0.1 and follow along.

netconfig.

From your description it's also likely that it does DHCP, so if Slack
brings up your ethernet card properly, just choose that and be on your
way.

That, or edit /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf (this is from memory) and figure
out how it *really* works.

Yeah. Like I said in my other reply(before I read this post).
The modem uses dhcp to issue IP etc. Just run netconfig and set up for
dhcp.
