Default gnome in slackware

Hello,

I want to give a try on Gnome. I have tried to compile it myself from
the source but I always have errors (does someone have succeeded to do
this?). Maybe there is someone who have already built packages. I would
like something which install in a clearly identified subdirectory
(something similar to kde which reside in /opt/kde). I do not want
something like dropline gnome which install and configure a lot of thing
and mess the system.

Have you tried Freerock GNOME / Gnome.SlackBuild? They claim to have a
'complete and non-intrusive GNOME Distribution'.

Thanks I will try this. It seems it is what I want.

I will second the vote for Freerock. It works well.

In alt.os.linux.slackware, Antonio Celentano dared to utter,

One nice thing about GWARE is that they did a 64-bit port of their
packages for slamd64. I've not given them a try of course, but for
those of you running slamd64 who like GNOME, it's worth looking into I
think.

Hi,
I just yesterday installed Freerock Gnome - the full package -
and so far it works fine with the Slackware 10.1 and 2.4.29 kernel.
There are some interesting packages included - like kino and transcode.

During the install process it asked me to choose between patched or
unstable versions of some packages I had never even heard of.
I usually answered conservatively having no idea what most of them do.

I actually read some of the instructions before the install -
and it told me to use Mozilla from current. I duly removepkg'd
the existing Mozilla and installpkg'd the Mozilla 1.7.11 downloaded
from current. And at the end of the Gnome install prcoess there was
a message that Mozilla wasn't installed! So I removed and reinstalled
Mozilla - which seems to work without problems.
