| I was looking to set up a linux based fax using my laser printer and an inexpensive scanner. But, after a couple days of research, I'm numb. Most SANE compatability websites are 2-5 yrs out of date and most of the hardware listed on the current SANE site is so old it's out of production. I get the impression the scanner makers couldn't care less about the linux market and the linux community has thrown up its hands in resignation. What's the deal? Any you Slackers found a low end scanner still being made with drivers, SANE or otherwise, or would I be better off just buying a cheapo fax machine? nb |

I don't think so, though maybe the Linux community don't hold as much fax users than some other end-user oriented desktop interface furnishers ;-) > What's the deal? Ask ANC, it's all about upholstery ... (boy, how many will spot the quotation :-) > Any you Slackers found > a low end scanner still being made with drivers, SANE or otherwise, Well, this scanner I have, a gift from family, was supposed to be uncompatable, at first, though someone wrote an extent to SANE for the same chip, then it was "unofficially" SANEd but worked allright (an HP-4300C) What is this special scanner you have, or would have, what specs ? Do you have a brand, type, category in mind ? I understand you may have o struggle a bit with catalogs, they're in it for the money, didyaknow ? But, if you can find what *chip* is used inside of the scanners you aim, I think you can find if the chip is reported as fully untangled on the SANE site. > or > would I be better off just buying a cheapo fax machine? If you really need to fax why not, it is not written in steel that yo *have* to use a general purpose computer to replace every appliance ! Or is it ?-) |

| Avoid the SANE problem. Use a SCSI based scanner. Works like a charm with my inboard SCSI card. | I got a Canon PIXMA MP130 (printer/scanner/photocopy). Although I was able to use the drivers for Canon ip1500 to make the printer work http://www.lowlevel.cz/log/pivot/entry.php?id=40 No such luck so far with the scanner. May be it uses compatible chipset with Canon's earlier flatbed USB scanners. Although Canon gets a bad rap in the Linux community, it does make the printer drivers available on its Japanese site: ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/ |

That's approx. what the SANE's list tells : http://www.sane-project.org/unsuppor...xma-mp110.html Bad news, but that's news ... |

After rebate, $150, and prints great photos to boot. Wayne |
