| I've invested substantial effort in installing some applications [in different versions of linux] on a 40 GB IDE, where I can read the FAT hda1 also. With the 32 GB limiting strap the BIOS can auto-detect the IDE and linux can of course read every thing. I too am a victim of M$hit-Win, in that often I need to use Wxyz to read M$-files posted to me. Apparently I lost the MBR soon after I bought the 40 GB IDE; so I normally boot linux [1 of 3 installations] via fd0, [although I've now noticed that with the 32 GB limiting strap, the Mandrake9 start-menu (propably lilo) works too]. Since hda1 has enough space I could install W98 there, except that I can't get DOS to see hda1. If I used WIN/DOS-fdisk, I fear I could loose all my linux installations. Please advise how I could run W98 from this 40 GB IDE which has still ample free space, without risking my existing linux installations, and without a major rearrangement of the IDE. Thanks for any info. == Chris Glur. |

Make sure that it IS the only partition that you work with. If not sure, delete it in linux fdisk and create a smaller partition with FDISK (500M-1G is plenty for Win98). > > Thanks for any info. > > == Chris Glur. > Have fun Stanislaw Slack user from Ulladulla. |

A few alternatives: 1) If you are only looking at documents from Microsoft Office you might not need Windows, maybe it would be enough with OpenOffice? 2) If you need to really run Windows applications you still might not need Windows, maybe the applications will work fine in wine? Most office applications work fine, gaming applications mostly have problems. 3) If you really need to run windows, try one of may favorite programs: qemu (www.qemu.org). That program emulates a complete PC where you can install Windows. It does not only emulate a PC, it could also emulate a network with a samba server which shares a file system from your linux box to with the emulated PC. If your BIOS has problems with your big HD Win98 will also have problems as it uses the BIOS to access the HD. However, the emulated PC with qemu has no such problems in its emulated BIOS. regards Henrik -- The address in the header is only to prevent spam.
