How are you trying to run an application? If you are on KDE you should
use the start menu. You can also type the name of the application on the
command line. You will not get more answers unless you are more precize
(which desktop / window manager you use; give a precize example of what
you have done; etc...).

Not sure, till you give us a little more information!

Are you running X when you get this error?
What window manager are you using?
Exactly which programs are you trying to run and how are you trying to
run them (by clicking on something with the mouse? by issuing a command
at a prompt?)
Can you give us an example?

What window manager are you running? (KDE, XFCE, BlackBox)

How are you running applications? Are you clicking on files on the desktop
to open them in an application or are you using a menu or icon to run the
application?
