| How can I load a second X server and a simple window manager in a different resolution in display 0:1 in KDE? Normally I use KDE 3.4 with Slackware 10.2 with a 1280x1024 resolution. This works great but dosemu is too small. Most of my dos programs in dosemu _require_ an 80x25 xerm window to load. This window is too small to easily read in 1280x1024 resolution but 800x600 is much better. Although I can change the resolution (alt-ctl-keypad +/-) to 800x600 so the dosemu programs are happy and easy to read, this changes _all_ of my KDE virtual windows to 800x600 - a real PITA to switch and use. My question is how to load a second X server running a simple wm at 800x600 in display 0:1. Twm is nice and simple because it by default loads an xterm conveniently at 80x25. Should I run xinit with parameters? Somewhere I read xinit is only for use by the _first_ X window to run. My startx _only_ runs KDE (unless I run xwmconfig to change the wm) although I notice that xinit will run any window manager in /etc/X11/xinit with the right parameter. I have tried from a user console: X :1 & xauth add :1 . ?mcookie? To grant permissions, doesn't work xterm --display :1 I get a screen on alt-F8 with a simple X in the middle but cannot get an xterm to load. In trying to get a second X running, I've munged the X system twice requiring a hard reboot. This is dangererous so I would appreciate some knowledgable advice. Thank you -- My real sig is much better. |

In xorg.conf, set up 2 Screen sections; identical except for the maximum usable resolution. Then set up two ServerLayout sections, one for each Screen section. Keeping your current ServerLayout section *before* the new one you create will ensure that it is the default. The second X server can then be started with a command like: startx -- -layout MyDosLayout :1 Hope that works for you ... never tried it myself. Jeffrey |

However, some are not appropriate for a terminal. HTH Sumo |

From 9x15 what are the next two larger sizes? Larry -- My real sig is much better. |

Somewhere on the filesystem there is a font.alias that maps "9x15" to a particular font. > > From 9x15 what are the next two larger sizes? > > Larry I don't know, but another way to get larger/different fonts in an xterm is by using "Shift-KEYPAD_PLUS". This will automagically cycle among different font sizes. "Shift-KEYPAD_MINUS" cycles in the opposite direction. You can use xfontsel to browse the fonts that X recognizes. Or you can use the gnome-terminal or the konsole both of which allow you to select fonts using a dialog box. |

When you sort any other problems, you can put multiple entries in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers. I do this at home, where I typically have four or five diferent X's and varous resolutions (including a 640x400 for TV). Annoyingy, however, KDE has some wierd syntax for its config file, so I've resorted to (the very basic) xdm until I solve the mystery. -- #Paul |
