| I am installing Slack 10.1 but with Kernel 2.6.12 on a number of older Celeron300 computers. The batch of 7 computers are virtually identical. On two of them, during poweroff I get an error and no proper shutdown: /etc/rc.d/rc.K: line 244: 4106 Segmentation fault poweroff I have to hold the power switch for 4 seconds to get the beasts to turn off. I thought perhaps this might be a BIOS issue and I tried all the BIOS setup options regarding ACPI/APM stuff like Power Saving etc, to no avail. Any ideas where I should start hunting down this problem? ******************************** to reply via email remove "fake" Microsoft will soon release their newest product: a vacuum cleaner. It will be their only product which doesn't suck. |

Also, since you are using 2.6, then use ACPI over APM. I think you may want to go Slack 10.2, or at least verify you have all of the patches to 10.1 applied. You will then need to fixup /etc/rc.d to account for the "new" startup scripts. For the kernel, I would go with 2.6.15.6 from testing in current. Note, you need rc.modules for 2.6, too. The changelog for each kernel release is too long to ignore. -- Douglas Mayne |

Hmmm, my reaction is to try real-mode APM power down, turn off ACPI Celeron300 is back when ACPI mostly busted, I'd also check if there's an updated BIOS for those old boxen if they otherwise similar. I'd also go with 2.6.15.7 if you comfortable with kernel patch/compile, just revert (patch -R) 2.6.15.6 then apply 2.6.15.7 and recompile. http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...ch-2.6.15.6.gz (30k) http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...ch-2.6.15.7.gz (33k) Much quicker than downloading: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...6.15.7.tar.bz2 (38M) Grant. -- Memory fault -- brain fried |

If the problem persists, it's hardware. If it doesn't, it's something you've screwed up in software. - -- It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, Than for a man to hear the song of fools. You've been asked too many times to shut up and leave the newsgroup. You are the only one who is whining about PGP, and no-one cares about you nor what you think. Like I said before, go back to hunting your elusive Canadian beaver. What on earth are you talking about? > Like I said before, go back to hunting your elusive Canadian > beaver. Hicks has never been to Canada. We wouldn't let him in. In any case, Coward Hicks wouldn't know what to do if he was faced with a beaver, of any nationality, unless, of course, it was related to him by blood. Tell us again, why Hicks is your hero and why you constantly try to curry favour with him, just as you have done with this post? Why do you curry favour with Hicks? Is that because it is natural for you to curry favour? Your life isn't complete if you are not snuggling up to, and kissing somebody's ass? cordially, as always, rm |
