John Culleton and I are long time (to be polite) acquaintances in the book publishing industry and while he is stubborn and sometimes intractable, believe me he is not an idiot (your words). He knows more about Slackware and Linux than all of the dog-pack put together and has worked tirelessly to promote Linux (and Slack) in the book-pub industry. He's a well-known and creative book-interior designer (only one on the planet I know who uses TeX), he is a co-sysop/admin on the largest publishing listserv in the USA, has given countless hours of his time helping people succeed as publishers, and has written hundreds of posts over the years 'cajoling' people to take a look at Linux as an alternative to Win or the Mac. John and I have our 'political differences' in the industry, but he deserves more (ok, at least as much) respect from the dog-pack as anyone here because he really DOES something for the Linux community by being a vocal and WELL RESPECTED and highly regarded spokesperson for it in the book publishing business. John is a major Slack user.... probably (my guess) from version 1.0 You owe John a apology, Dan because you really fucked up this time... not that I'm surprised. anc |

I don't believe much of anything you say. In fact, you saying he is not an idiot pretty much confirms it. > He knows more about Slackware and Linux than all of the dog-pack put > together and has worked tirelessly to promote Linux (and Slack) in the > book-pub industry. You don't have any idea how much he (or anyone else around here) knows about Slackware and Linux. > He's a well-known and creative book-interior designer (only one on the > planet I know who uses TeX), he is a co-sysop/admin on the largest > publishing listserv in the USA, has given countless hours of his time > helping people succeed as publishers, and has written hundreds of posts > over the years 'cajoling' people to take a look at Linux as an > alternative to Win or the Mac. I don't owe him shit. The fact remains that he posts from GG, which is a *certain* sign of an idiot, whether you like or agree with it. | Thanks for a helpful reply. I am neither as dumb as Dan C alleges nor as brilliant as ANC suggests. I am just a working Slackware user who is trying to get the job done with some help from my friends. I have a newsreader of course (Knode) but it lacks the facilities of the Google online facility. Hence I use Google not from ignorance but from preference. |

Everyone has the right to use the news client of choice, of course, but what possible advantages can Google provide that a good news client cannot? In the above short paragraph alone, I see two problems. You have no attributes to the post you are replying to. Who is it? Dan or A-B? Please, if you are going to use Google, enable the function that includes text from previous post and trim accordingly. And, Google software apparently has poor line wrap and/or formating abilities or maybe you just hit the CR too soon. I know full well Knode can to better than that. The only advantage Google can offer is, it's free. nb |

As are, to the best of my knowledge, Knode, Slrn, Tin, Trn, and any number of other news reading clients which normally don't exhibit the faults you've pointed out from the OP's post from Google. Still, a conscious decision to use Google does suggest that he isn't using it out of ignorance, nor is the OP required to justify his decision to us here. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sylvain Robitaille syl@alcor.concordia.ca Systems and Network analyst Concordia University Instructional & Information Technology Montreal, Quebec, Canada ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
