_Good_ move!

Does that mean you have done so but it was hard work? Or does it mean you
haven't yet done it and want help? If the latter, could you be a bit
more specific about the trouble? Any error messages?, what were the
symptoms? etc

Noble aspirations both!

dvd+rw - does the computer show any sign of detecting the thing?

You have the dvd+rw-tools package installed

If so then go get

libdvdnav
libdvdcss
libdvdread

from here and install 'em

http://www.linuxpackages.net

Fire up Xine or Mplayer and see what you can do :-)

wifi ?

depends on various things including havng the right kernel module loaded.
What kind of built in wifi have you got?
Care to share with us the out put of

ifconfig -a

?

Make, model number? (of the laptop AND the peripherals you're having
trouble with ...)

You never know, if you provide detailed information about the problems
you're encountering, someone might be inclined to try and help you ...

If you were to give some useful details, you might get some help with that.

Then its time to go to "Linux on Laptops" to see if there's anybody who
has installed Linux on a laptop like yours:
