If your request for pardon is sincere (can't imagine why I doubt that), maybe you'll accept a suggestion that you undertake an appropriate act of contrition, like say, leaving everyone here in peace for six months; and that upon your return, you swear off name calling, personal attacks, condescending sermons, the giving of unsolicited advice, and inciting others to bad behavior. -- Old Man |

OK, sounds good. See you in the Spring of '07 .... if I'm still running Linux. Bought a Mac Mini two weeks ago to give it a look-see. OS-X as a WM (Aqua?) is lame compared to KDE and the OS-X file manager (called Finder) is from hell. But the basic apps (email, etc.) are comparable to KDE apps. KDE is far, far, far more configurable in colors, fonts, etc. Under all the lipstick and makeup of OS-X is some incarnation of BSD and you get full use of the command line via a terminal window... just like Linux. You can find binaries of most of the Linux utilities... and the install method is basic drag/drop. I got wget the other day. OS-X comes with curl which is good but a PITA compared to wget. Every piece of hardware I've plugged in works out of the box. So far that is the one clear advantage I've seen over Linux. I also like the integration that my brand new HP printer/scanner has via the Mac software it comes with (HP also includes a WinXP CD, but nothing for Linux). Beats hell out of SANE. The newsreader I found (MT-NewsWatcher) is ancient compared to what Linux has, but it's free. Not much else in Mac-land is free, but you can find some freeware and shareware on www.versiontracker.com. I can run all of the Adobe/Macromedia publishing/graphic stuff we need. GIMP is good, but not enough for some of our needs. We need some new hardware... a bunch of our machines are getting long in the tooth and making noises. Maybe we'll replace them with Minis. I like the small foot-print, quiet design, and the inexpensive phone support we can buy ($149 for three years). We can keep our monitors, keyboards and mice... although I bought a Bluetooth wireless Mighty Mouse since BT is built into the Mini (as is Airporter). The BT mouse is nice but way overpriced IMO.... but I'm a sucker for good design and innovation. We'll try out the Mac stuff, then maybe take a look at Vista when it comes out and decide whether to change or stick with Linux (except for one or two ancient lappies that 'need' Slack.) Personally, I don't see that big a change going from Linux to Mac (or Mac to Linux.) I bought a new MacBook and Nano iPod for my wife who was running Kanotix on a Toshiba. She picked up OS-X in about 15 minutes... no harder nor much different than KDE... and OpenOffice on Linux is NeoOffice on the Mac (although the OO folks say they will come out with their own native suite for Mac in January.) Apple Mail is like Kmail and Safari is like FF (I've not tried the Mac version of FF yet.) Like the old chicken commercial stated: "parts are parts." Her new iPod of course is totally integrated into the OS via iTunes... and she will bankrupt me if she keeps buying songs at a buck a piece. She was also able to get a commercial version of Scrabble and Risk for her laptop...$19 at CompUSA. Both have killer graphics and run off of (on in conjunction with) a DVD. A happy wife is a good thing to have... consider the alternative! Seems to me after two weeks with this Mac that you get all the safety and security of Linux with the ease-of-use and hardware compatibility of the Mac. Yeah, you pay through the nose for it... but maybe the hardware is better made, etc. We'll find out in due time, I'm sure. OK, that's it for me. Back in six. ANC |
