Default Linux Today article trashes Slackware & Volkerding

There is an article on Linux Today "Slackware 11--Grandfather Distro
Showing Its Age" that is trashing Pat Volkerding as well Slackware.

I found I became embarrased for the "author" (sic!). I'm sure that
Linux Today was simply trawling for any articles on Linux - the editor
surely could not have reviewed it before adding it to newslist. It is
like reading some dirty little paragraph on a washroom wall. The
article actually reflects quite badly on Linux Today.

Doesn't the author want to hide in a hole after posting his embarassing
thoughts?

There really is no need to defend P.V. or Slackware because of the
article, it should be simply ignored...

Sounds like it could have been written by that one writter guy who sometimes
trolls the group:

"My biggest complaint with Slackware is still the maintainer himself. Patrick
*is* Slackware. There is no democracy in this distribution. It is in every way
*his* project, and he runs it as such."

"Perhaps one day we can de-program the Slackware faithful and this grandfather
will get taken off life support for good."

I think the author needs to get himself a Mac.

You're thinking of Al Canton, but I don't agree that this article reads
like it was written by him. For one thing, as dense as Al makes himself
out to be, he *has* been able to get a working Slackware installation,
whereas this Moe fellow claims to be unable to accomplish even that. I
don't doubt that Al will be able to get Slackware-11 working on his
system. On the other hand, Moe seems to be a better writer than Al.

Al would also have "signed" the article. I had to dig back to this
writer's "main" site (is it just me, or does he have some terribly
broken HTML frame action going on there?) to even figure out that he
calls himself "Moe" and claims to be a techie ...

> I think the author needs to get himself a Mac.

A Mac would indeed be a suitable platform for Al, who I believe would
know how to use the tools on that system. This Moe fellow would likely
find a Commodore Amiga too advanced, albeit "dated" ... :-)

Assuming he could find his way into the hole, that is. Look on the
bright side: at least he won't be posting to the newsgroup (again,
assuming he could figure out how to do so).

Yes, Sylvain, his layout seems pretty broken. It's done in Javascript.
What fool does layout in Javascript? Oh, right, a fool who can't get
Slackware installed.

I'm not an active participant of this forum an longer but I do read it
on a weekly basis and since my name was mentioned I thought it only
right to set the record straight.

I did not write the article nor did I collaborate on it. I agree with
most of the article and many of the objections that the author has with
Slackware, but the piece is not my work nor did I have any contact with
the author, pre or post publication. I do not know whom the author is.

I've had Slackware running for several years now. Installing 11 (on an
old Gateway P3) was no different from 10.x or 9.1. I think Slackware has
one of the best installers in Linux.... simple to follow, easy to use so
long as you already have your HD partitioned.

Most people are better writers than I am. However I've had a few
successes here and there over the years.

This is correct. I ALWAYS sign all my articles... and the commercial
pieces I write as well as the ones written about me are always posted on

Yes, we have been evaluating the Mac platform for the past three months.
We bought a Mac Book and a Mac Mini (both Intel) and so far they meet
our needs, especially in graphics as GIMP will not do CYMK, a much
needed function in the publishing arena. Adobe's InDesign 'platform' is
excellent, and will be better when it is eventually compiled for the
Intel processor as opposed to running under the Rosseta emulator.

So far the OS-X platform has given us the security and stability of
Linux along with a good UI. I prefer KDE, but Aqua is almost as good.

The Apple platform is very expensive, but Apple support has been
excellent and efficient. They own 'the stack' and they do a good job
supporting their base. There is also a large and extensive Apple user
community but I don't feel it is as technically qualified as those in
the various major Linux distros. YMMV.

If we were to make the decision today, we would replace all our (aged)
hardware with Macs. But we'll see how our test machines do over the next
four to six months and then decide.

Here it is:

I was going to say more, but don't see any point. What can you say
about a kid with a BA in computer science who can't install Slackware.

Surely someone who places "flash" before substance.

Which might be his dislike of Slackware. None of the glossiness
that he thinks is needed.

Indeed, it leads one to question the value of the degree held by the author.

Rather than a link, you make me track down this idiot?

Thanks a lot.
