The GNP of the United States for this month alone is estimated to be on the
order of $14 trillion! The US dollar is the strongest currency on earth and
pretty much the standard by which international trade is conducted.

The United States is the wealthiest country on earth, it is possible that
the United States is wealthier than the entire European Union - if you
think you know better, please cite.

Uh, I think you need to GAFC - the war so far has only been a drop in the
bucket compared to previous debt over the Cold War. Last I checked it
was 500 billion compared to the trillions of debt that already existed.
And, that 500 billion doesn't take into account all the money that would
have been spent anyway for the troops and equipment on "maintenance".

What developed nation isn't in debt? The US still has the strongest economy
in the world, and that is what sets your credit limit. Japan has a debt
that dwarfs ours. Even China is learning about debt as they become more
and more developed (hell, they even defaulted on some oil payments a year
or two ago). Luckily, the economy is still strong. There are some countries
in Europe that are relatively debt free. However, their aging population,
lack of population growth, and socialist way of doing things is turning them
from the black to the red. The U.S. has an aging population too, but
immigration is very strong.

The benefits from getting Iraq under control will greatly outweigh the price.
Unfortunately, because the fucking Brits just arbitrarily place boundaries
with no regard to tribal regions, we will probably never bring peace to Iraq
(or the Middle East in general) unless you just kill everyone over there.
That is my only issue with the war - you can't win a war where you don't
go all out in eliminating the enemy. You can't "bring peace and democracy"
to an area that doesn't want it.
