I couldn't get my photos from my CASIO QV-R40 using gphoto too.
Tailing /var/log/messages and connecting the camera, it was detected as
/dev/sda1. Then did a
# mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
and then copied the photos to my home directory as an ordinary user.
