| Hi, Since Slax LiveCD worked so well I thought I would try Slackware again. Installation went well (Slackware is very responsive on this 450 Mhz Pentium II with 128 Megs of RAM -- a computer that was just sitting) -- but the sound card is proving to be a bit of a challenge. Slackware found the card, has the correct chip set selected, but when I try testing the sound I get nothing. Kmix and Alsamixer both show the sound settings, and it's not muted. When I quit the Session I see several "FiFo" errors -- sound blocked for such&such a number of ms. I'm also getting some "Window size" errors, but I not sure if that's related to the sound card tests or not. It's been a long while since I looked at Slackware. I like it. BTW, one more thing. When I boot up I come to a text login, instead of a graphical one -- then I type startx -- which doesn't bother me. But I would also like to use fluxbox at times. "startfluxbox" results in a "Can't start Xwindows -- or no connection to Xwindows -- error. (Sorry I don't have the exact error.) This is not major but any pointers would be appreciated. -- RonB "There's a story there...somewhere" |

I've copied your post to a file and will refer to it when making changes. I don't actually want fluxbox to load automatically, just when I want to use it. -- RonB "There's a story there...somewhere" |

You could just try typing xwmconfig selecting from the list of window managers and then typing startx. -- Two Ravens "...hit the squirrel..." |

Alsaconf got the sound working -- at least half of it. MIDI still doesn't test out -- but I'm learning. Thanks to all. -- RonB "There's a story there...somewhere" |

Here's how I do it: richgrise@HeartWood:~ $ cat .profile PS1='\u@\h:\w\n\$ ' export PS1 if [ `tty` = "/dev/tty1" ] ; then echo -n 'Start X? (Y/n) ' read YN if [ "x$YN" == x -o "x$YN" == xy -o "x$YN" == xY ] ; then echo "starting X" startx fi fi I wanted to be able to read the fortune when I log in. ;-) And to pick a window manager, you can always symlink /etc/X11/xinitrc.<take your pick> to ~/.xinitrc . Also copied. In your home directory create a file called .xinitrc using your text editor of choice. An example file would look like this #kdestart #exec gnome-session #exec fluxbox Now when you log into your computer in console mode load up this file in your favourite text editor (eg vim or emacs) Then select the gui that you want to use. If you want to use fluxbox delete the # on the #exec fluxbox line in the file. Save the file when exiting the text editor. Now all you have to do is type the command startx at the command prompt and fluxbox will load. |
