Strange. Can you see arial also in your KDE or Gnome settings? (Configuration Centre, or whatever). An other thing, but I might be complete wrong, just speculating. Firefox is a program build with GTK (Gnome ToolKit?), so it looks like Gnome, maybe fonts too? (I mean, if you use KDE). I have gtk-qt-engine installed: http://www.linuxpackages.net/search_...qt-engine&ver= >Shouldn't the style sheet find it, if Firefox and X can find it? Yes, it should, but in my case it didn't either. Read on... After reading some things in the changelog about fonts, though being there, not found by the system, I went looking what fonts I have. (I was missing the Helvetica font after applying the x11-6.8.2-i486-9_slack10.2 patch). Well, it turned out that that had nothing to do with that patch. Helvetica just never got loaded! Though it exists on my system in: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi I looked further. found in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf : ><!-- Commented out font directories: > These are not indexed by default, as fontconfig then seems > to prefer bitmapped fonts in some cases... > <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/fonts/100dpi</dir> > <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/fonts/75dpi</dir> >--> Uncommented those lines, rebooted. Wow, font Helvetica was available! But I didn't know that Helvetica to me looked as ugly as that other font with name 'Clean'. I just didn't know before how it looked. Might sound stupid, but I always thought it was loaded, but never checked that. KDE Configuration Centre - Fonts made me think so. Instead an other font which WAS available was loaded. While I had all ugly (Helvetica) fonts in KDE, I went to yahoo.com, expecting that now Helvetica should be loaded, instead of the font 'Clean', but not so. Same as your problem then: it should load not 'Clean' if Arial or Helvetica is available on the system. Maybe somebody else sees a solution in this style sheet? (Style sheets are not my native language) : http://us.js2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/l...x_20070405.css Anyway, while I didn't seem to need any of the fonts in: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi I've put back the lines in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf I changed back to their original state >Someone else mentioned that fontconfig patches were released yesterday >... I might apply these over the weekend and see if it fixes the >problem. Although after reading the changelog I doubt it will. I also find it funny that when I had Helvetica loaded, yahoo showed font 'Clean'. Maybe someone else? P.S. My problems are solved now. I use 'Sans Serif' in KDE, and for fixed-width font I use 'Courier 10 Pitch'. This way everything looks most clear and pleasant to me. >-- MG Hope your problem get solved! Solution is propabily just in front of us, we just don't see it. Manuel |

Only thing I had to do was install 'gtk-qt-engine', to make make GTK based programs like Firefox and VLC look not so ugly. Quote: "The GTK-Qt Theme Engine is a project allowing GTK to use Qt widget styles. My problems are solved now. I use 'Sans Serif' in KDE, and for > fixed-width font I use 'Courier 10 Pitch'. > > This way everything looks most clear and pleasant to me. > >> -- MG > > Hope your problem get solved! Solution is propabily just in front of > us, we just don't see it. > > Manuel Instead of forcing Firefox to use my fonts for all web pages via the "preferences" dialog, I changed the file /etc/fonts/local.conf to make X windows map "Clean" to "Bitstream Vera Sans", since Clean is the font that seems to be messing things up on Yahoos web email. Now my web email folders and links etc. look the way they should. And for now this will do fine. In case anyone is interested, here are the changes I made to /etc/fonts/local.conf (Restart X after editing) <!-- Replace Clean with a nicer font --> <match target="pattern" name="family"> <test name="family" qual="any"> <string>Clean</string> </test> <edit name="family" mode="assign"> <!-- Other choices - Courier New, Luxi Mono --> <string>Bitstream Vera Sans </string> </edit> </match> -- MG |
