Hi,
I've a Sun Ultra 80 running Solaris 9, a Dec Alpha running Tru64 5.1B
UNIX and a HP C3000 running HP-UX 11.

Before logging into the Sun, one is presented with a login screen
which has the option to log in from to the local host or a remote
machine. The Dec Alpha, which runs CDE is seen on the list of remote
hosts, so I can remotely log into the Dec Alpha from the Sun. (So too
is another Solaris machine, but that is hardly surprising.)

However, I'm not shown the HP 11 machine as a networked device I can
log into.

All machine run CDE, but are Sun's and HP's versions (both HP-UX and
Tru64 are operating systems from HP).

Any suggestions, or now I might resolve this?

Assuming the machine is on the same subnet, it is not configured to
respond to XDMCP requests; on a Sun I believe the file is
/usr/dt/config/Xconfig I don't know what the HP config file is.

One question: do you know how to ssh to the HP box and export the graphical
display back to the sun? This is a preferred method as all your traffic
is encrypted between the hosts; I might suggest that since
colleagues/students with Linux/Unix boxes basically have packet sniffing and
analysis tools at their fingertips.

That list is generated from an XDMCP broadcast to the local subnet.
The HP may be configured not to respond - check the Xaccess file
for dtlogin/xdm (whichever it is running to handle XDMCP requests).

Run Doctor DT on the HP machine: /usr/contrib/bin/X11/dr_dt
Make sure CDE is actually running on HP
Make sure DNS is configured or, if using host files, that they match.
Dump the contents of dr_dt to me by mail at
dmercer@mn.rr.com and I'll have a look at it.

I resolved this. When I installed the OS, I was one disk missing, so
skipped a disk. For this reason, I did a reinstall of the OS once I'd
located the missing CD. Whether the problem was due to the missing CD or
not I don't know, but it works okay now, so the problem is solved.

As I've said, I solved this now.

The answer is I don't know, but suspect I can probably find some
information on how to do it. If you have any particular tips doing it on
a Sun I'd be interested. The computers in question are home computers
behind a firewall, with only a 56k dialup modem. Hence it's not a big
deal, although ssh can be configured to compress, which might make the
transfer faster. However, I do have a need to do this at work, so I am
interested in the process.
