| I have a Sun SPARCStation LX with no cdrom and no floppy drive. This was given to me so that I could learn more about Solaris but he had forgotten the root password. I have tried booting the SPARCStation into single user mode which it then asks for a password (which he also forgot as the box had been sitting around for a large amount of months unused). Is there anyway I can login to this box as root? I don't know much about SPARC architecture and any documents and information or a solution that you can provide would be grateful. Jal |

You will need to obtain a CDROM and a copy of a Solaris boot CD. Instructions on what to do next can easily be found by a trivial search on Google's newsgroups archive. -am © 2003 |

You can probably boot from the network, if you have another unixy system that can provide the bootp [?it's been a while since I had to muck with such things] services and the contents of the CD-ROM for NFS mounting. James -- Consulting Minister for Consultants, DNRC I can please only one person per day. Today is not your day. Tomorrow isn't looking good, either. I am BOFH. Resistance is futile. Your network will be assimilated. |

| Good morning all! Post your technical queries to ap-csc-english@sun.com if you are based in the Asia Pacific region (including Australia and New Zealand). This is the Technical Support area. They should be able to point you in the right direction. However, unless you have a Cobalt machine - all other hardware and software support requires you to have a valid maintenance contract number with Sun. If you don't have one, be prepared to pay for time and materials costs.
