Default old 501-1450 NIC supported in Sol9?

i am trying to make a sparstation 5 110mhz a proxy server. i can
configure the onboard NIC, however i cannot get the second NIC
(501-1450) to talk to another computer with ping. (the link light is
on). I suspect the 501-1450 is not supported in Sol9 as it appears to
be from the IPX era. Is this accurate? Could I use Sol8 as a
substitute?

i can use plumb and get a routing table in the kernel for this NIC.
this shows up with netstat -r

i have found the answer. the 501-1450 nic is working under dhcp. so it
must be my configuration in Sol9 with this NIC. any good guides on the net
i can use for reference?
