| Hi! I downloaded the Solaris 10 6/06 DVD for Sparc, as I'd like to install it on a SunFire 240 system. This system doesn't have a graphics card, but it has a ALOM (Sun(tm) Advanced Lights Out Manager 1.3), to which I can connect. Now, how do I boot from the DVD to start the installation? I inserted the DVD and got me a boot prompt: {0} ok boot /pci@1e,600000/ide@d/cdrom SC Alert: Host System has Reset Sun Fire V240, No Keyboard Copyright 1998-2003 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved. OpenBoot 4.11.4, 4096 MB memory installed, Serial #59201045. Ethernet address 0:3:ba:87:56:15, Host ID: 83875615. Rebooting with command: boot /pci@1e,600000/ide@d/cdrom Boot device: /pci@1e,600000/ide@d/cdrom File and args: Evaluating: Can't open boot device This didn't work {1} ok boot cdrom Boot device: /pci@1e,600000/ide@d/cdrom@0,0:f File and args: Can't open boot device What am I doing wrong? I verified the md5sum of the downloaded ISO and it matches the one on the sun site. I did not burn the ISO as a file to the DVD it "properly" (ie. when I had a look on it on my XP machine, I saw files). Thanks, Alexander Skwar -- echo "ICK, NOTHING WORKED!!! You may have to diddle the includes.";; -- Larry Wall in Configure from the perl distribution |

It's probably not an ALOM issue, but the newest ALOM is up to 1.5.5. > Now, how do I boot from the DVD to start the installation? Can you boot off other Solaris CDs other than the latest Solaris 10 you burned? Are you able to boot this particular burned CD-ROM on other SPARC based machines? Trinean |

I Had A liteon DVD burner in my SPARC WS and it could not boot from a DVD burned on the same Drive same workstation. The advice I got was - Change to Plextor . So I got a Plextor 760A DVD burner in the WS and it works. If you burned this DVD on a substandard PC DVD writer it might be unusable. The DVD boot puts higher demands on accuracy on the medium. and the DVD readers accuracy. If you try with CD's instead of DVD you have amuch greater possibility for home-burned media to work. //Lars |

| Trinean <trinean@yahoo.com>: > Can you boot off other Solaris CDs other than the latest Solaris 10 you > burned? No, I cannot. I tried the original Solaris 10 DVD 3/05, and it fails with the same error message. As it fails with "real" DVDs, I don't think that I've got a media issue. I also burned the 6/06 DVD on a different brand of media, and it also failed. This makes me even more sure, that I don't have (only) a media issue. PS: Thanks for the information that I'm out-of-date! I appreciate that you looked so closely! I'll update in the near future. > Are you able to boot this particular burned CD-ROM on other SPARC based > machines? I've got none, where I could try. | Trinean <trinean@yahoo.com>: > Are you able to boot this particular burned CD-ROM on other SPARC based > machines? I'm now also to boot this particular burned CD-ROM on this particular SPARC box It seems that the DVD drive wasn't properly connected, although it had power. Anyway - after removing the drive and re-inserting it, I can boot just fine. Thanks a lot for your help!
