Default Did I shoot mysefl in foot?

E3500, Solaris 10

Was patching this machine, recently. I installed 118833-36 (kernel patch).
I inadvertently applied it while at run level 3, rather than in single user
mode, as the README says. The machine had no users on it at the time (other
than me as "root"). No apparent problems. Reconfig boot, and everything
appears OK.

Is there a time bomb waiting to explode?

Thank you.

DG

Not very likely. The single-user-mode advice is to minimise the
chance of advers side effects. A quiescent system will very likely
be OK, provided you reboot right after applying it.

Hey Rich,

My Solaris 8 is finally working. I need some more help if you can that
will be great.

What is the recommended patch level for Solaris 8 and how do I install
the patches one after the other? My solaris 8 is 02/04?
Same thing with Solaris 10 any ideas on installing all the patches on
Solaris 10?

What HDD slices do I need for Solstice Disk Suite installation?
What HDD slices do I need for Sun Volume Manager?

I have gone through the documents on How to Install Oracle 10 g on
Solaris, but none of the documents talk about specific file system
requirement and specifice HDD partition requirements?

Any ideas on how to use X windows ? I installed CYGWIN on my PC, but
it is not connecting to my server?

Any help would be great.

Thanks RIch.

Glad to hear it.

The latest patch level is the recomemnded one! JUst use the scrip
"install_cluster" or something similar, and the patches will be
installed in the correct order.

Same thing.

You need one slice per set of metadbs (this is all explained in the
SDS/SVM docs).

Ditto (it's the same thing with a name change).

Sorry, I have no idea about Oracle.

Sorry, can't help here either, as I've never had to use X via Cygwin
or similar.

In the past I found it awkward to work with Sun's patches for the kinds of
reasons to which you allude (which ones, what order, etc.). I have to say
that, in my opinion, I have found 'smpatch', or its GUIized version
'updatemanager' to actually be of value. From my point of view, it lightens
the patching burden. So far, for me, it seems to actually be able to apply
the appropriate patches in the appropriate order. It seems to "do me no
harm". Yet, I can change the policies if I want. Or I can override the
policies if I want.

So, my advice would be: if you are unsure of how or what to patch, or if you
are uncertain about the whole patch thing, then start with the default
policy of 'smpatch' (or 'updatemanager') and let it do an update.

Remember, this opinion is worth what you paid for it, and others may
disagree vehemently, for reasons that are valid to them or their
installation.

You are a great asset for this forum Rich,
Thanks a million once again for all the help you have provided to a
lot of people on this forum over the years.
GOD BLESS YOU.

As you aalready aware that I have only one Netra server installed at
home. Are you aware if I connect that server VIA a router and install
DHCP manager or something on the server to obtain IP address from the
router will that work?

Any ideas on how to create the network or share atleast HDD resources
between my PC and Netra?

Any help would be great

You don't need to install DHCP manager if you're just want to obtain an
IP address via DHCP. Check out this page I wrote for more info:

NFS is the best solution that comes to mind.
