| Hi all, I was in my local Futureshop the other day, and I saw a 21" Samsung LCD monitor that could display 1600x1200 pixels. I'd LOVE to replace my two 21" CRTs with a couple of those puppies, but would prefer to buy Sun-branded ones (provided the extra cost wasn't prohibative). Can anyone from Sun give us a clue as to when we can expect a Sun-branded LCD monitor that can handle that resolution (or higher)? Running at 1280x1024 isn't an option for me, which rules out the current 19" LCD monitor, and the 24" 12:9 aspect ratio monitor is W-A-Y out of my price range... Besides, two of 'em won't fit on my desk. :-) Cheers, -- Rich Teer, SCNA, SCSA, author of "Solaris Systems Programming", published in August 2004. President, Rite Online Inc. | Rich, Although I have a vested interest in Sun's success I would still recommend saving your money and getting a 21" Planar or Viewsonic monitor. We run Samsung 213T LCDs on our Sun Blade 1000/2000s and they are great displays at 1600x1200. Reality Check: Sun doesn't add much if any value to their OEM'd displays, so the preference for a Sun branded model seems a little misplaced to me. Sun's warranty is also typically amongst the lowest in the business. We get 3 years parts and labour on the Samsung's and on the HP LCDs we buy, I think 1 year is typical on Sun displays and workstations. Given that the 19" 1280x1024 X7144A is over $1000 U.S. at the moment, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a cheap 21" LCD from Sun. -cjs |

I have one (they are still ~$1000, and I could only justify one to myself right now) and another 21" CRT from ViewSonic. For most things, I have not had any complaints. The LCD is fast, pretty, and seems to be well supported (kvm going to Sun Blade, windows box, couple of linux boxes). As other people have noticed, I did detect slight ghosting on very fast games. Definitely still playable/enjoyable, especially with 6800 series video card from Nvidia, but I did not detect the ghosting on the CRT. At this point, you can get a good quality 21" CRT for under $500, so if you have the desk space, you really still do need to justify it to yourself. |

Heh - I already have two 21" CRTs, taking up a third of my desk. What I'd like to do is replace them with something that doesn't take up as much room. Drawing less power is also an advantage, as I have my monitors on for 8 to 10 hours every day. -- Rich Teer, SCNA, SCSA, author of "Solaris Systems Programming", published in August 2004. The photo on my web site shows how they dominate my desk (which I tidied up especially for the photo!). The monitors are pushed back as far as they can go without hanging over the edge, which gives me about 18" in front of them. -- Rich Teer, SCNA, SCSA, author of "Solaris Systems Programming", published in August 2004. Rich, you need to update your HW list and to remove one "is available" from your web page (once a proofreader, always a proofreader). Bye, Dragan -- Dragan Cvetkovic, To be or not to be is true. G.
