Default Wierd Problems

We have a database (I believe it uses sybase)built by a company named
Cornerstone. I am having some exteremely wierd issues. I have
replaced the Hard drive and memory on the W2k Pro machine that it runs
on. We are expreincing large amounts of fragmentation on the hard
drive and if I defrag it, it usually corrupts the OS and I have to
reinstall. Also if a workstation experiences an error and shuts down
the connection to the database, the databse becomes corrupted and we
have to have cornerstone repair it. I cannot isolate what is causing
the database to get corupted and neither can corerstone.

I have reformated and reloaded W2K twice on this machine.

The only software on this W2k machine is the database, backup software,
and virus checker (AVG).
So what could be fragmenting the files on it?
