| Hi, after searching the HP Site w/o success I hope someone on the Group might help: The shor story: How might I get a legal Version of HP-UX 11 and is there something like the "Technical Enthusiast License" Digital used to issue for private users who wanted to get Tru64? The long story: After migration of our last HP-UX customer to Linux I asked IT if I might get the machine we used to compile the app on, which is a C200. None of us really felt comfortable with HP-UX, as we didn't know enough about it -- and I wanted to take the chance to get familar with HP-UX now. Now, the machine is set-up in my living room and runs, but I'd like to try a clean Install (HP-UX 11 was installed by 2001) but we didn't find the CDs. Would be great to get this solved! MTIA! Cheers, _ralf_ |

No, there isn't. Unlike Tru64 HP-UX (at least on workstations) licenses are not bound to an owner but to a machine. That means the license is always bound to a certain system. With older servers (Series 800) it's different, though: on these machines HP-UX licenses are bound to machine *and* owner. As to HP-UX media: you can buy them for a riddiculous price from HP, but not 11.0 any more since it's EOL'd already. But the HP-UX license allows you to buy media (not copies of these media!!!) elsewhere or to borrow them from someone to reinstall HP-UX on your machine. > The long story: After migration of our last HP-UX customer to Linux I > asked IT if I might get the machine we used to compile the app on, which > is a C200. Check ebay, HP-UX CD sets can be found there regularly. Or maybe someone here has an old CD set that he wants to give to you. BTW: since 11.0 is obsolete I'd recommend to get HP-UX 11i v1 for your machine. Benjamin |

For your first comment: Well, I did do a search in comp.sys.hp.hpux. I also subscribed the group two weeks before I posted my question (as I regularly do) in the hope to find an FAQ. However, my ISP seems to expire Articles (in this particular group) rather soon and so I didn't find anything. I must admit that I rely on my ISPs INN and don't use groups.g**gle etc. For the License-Answer: OK, thanks for making that clear! I'll set-up a search on eBay. However, do you have a estimate of what HP will charge for the Media (or, maybe a URL for that Info on the HP Site)? Thanks! Cheers, _ralf_ |

Sadly there isn't really a FAQ. > However, my ISP seems to expire Articles (in this particular group) > rather soon and so I didn't find anything. Groups.google.com is much better as it stores (almost) all UseNet messages and goes back to at least a decade ago. > For the License-Answer: OK, thanks for making that clear! The last time I looked after that (which was around two years ago) buying the media regularly was somewhere around 650EUR. Strangely, there were occasions where HP gave them away for free (i.e. due to Y2k they gave away 10.20 for free, then when 10.20 was EOL'd they gave 11.0 away, when 11.0 was EOL'd they gave away 11i v1), but every of these give-away-phases was rather short. For some time you also could order 11i CD kits for free on the HP website, but that program has been terminated. Benjamin |

Well, the "comp.sys.hp.hpux FAQ" is regularly posted and was just (today) posted again. However it is posted in a rather broken way, i.e. with an old/ duplicate Message-ID:, with an expired Expires: header, with conflicting X-Last-Updated:/Last-modified:, with an even older version at <http://www.faqs.org/faqs/hp/hpux-faq>, etc.. <http://howardk.freenix.org> can retrieve *part* of (an older version of) the article (<hp/[email protected]>), but it truncates it because it's too big. Google Groups does not seem to have it, probably because of the expired Expires: header. Because of this, <http://www.faqs.org/faqs/hp/hpux-faq> is the best reference I can give. I will send this response to the (listed) maintainer. Hopefully he will fix things. [...] |

Well, this Groups FAQ *just* came thru my ISPs News-Server ;-) Cheers, _ralf_ |

Well, that's what I'd really call expensive :-( However, we managed to find a (the) HP-UX 11 i CD-Set (dated September 2001) that was hidden (hiding?) in a Cabinet. So, while that's not the most recent Version I think I can perform a fresh install now and play around! Cheers, _ralf_ |

It's 11i so it's still supported, and you can download the updates from itrc.hp.com for free to get it up2date. Benjamin |

I will check the Updates but I hope I don't need any. After all, the System just stands, besides several other Systems, in my Living Room. I only have to persuade myself to use telnet; I'm a bit reluctant to that (and will soon try to install openssh on the C200), however, even telnet should not pose a Problem in my Living Room at all :-) Thanks again for your help!
